Comprehensive Recycling Plan
The City of Savanna provides curbside recycling for single family and multifamily residential customers on a request basis.  In addition Savanna makes available recycling service to various commercial and industrial customers in our service area. Materials such as mixed paper, cardboard and large volume users of plastic materials collection services are available to commercial, institutional and industrial customers, at a negotiated fee.
 
Residents may transport recycling items to the Transfer Station, located on the easterly end of Portland Avenue, and deposit recyclable items at not cost to the recycler.
 
The following provides an explanation of the services available to our residential customers:

Residential curbside recycling services include a 18 to 20 gallon bin, provided by the Cities for storage of recyclable materials between collection cycles. Curbside service includes tin, aluminum, , plastic (all 7) glass containers (all three colors), corrugated cardboard, junk mail, other metals, some frozen food packaging, magazines, phone books and newsprint. Customers are encouraged to separate recyclables prior to placement at the curb for collection services. The City of Savanna provides twice monthly service to all residential customers in its service area utilizing collection vehicles, which operate on scheduled routes and are dedicated to recycling service. Recyclable materials are placed into separate compartments in our vehicles. Loaded recyclable materials are transported to an intermediate processing facility, where said materials are prepared for shipment to Freeport Recycling Center in Freeport Illinois. Billing for this service is provided by the City of Savanna on a quarterly basis ($3.00 each month) and is an component part of the overall utility fee system designed by the various City Council for Water and Sewer Fees.
 
A report card is left with the customer in the bin provided, to improve our recycling collection system.
 
An extensive educational program is in place emphasizing waste reduction and recycling, as well as providing tips to the customers. (Copies of educational materials may be obtained at City Hall)
 
The City of Savanna primarily processes all recyclable materials collected in local markets, where these materials are further processed and prepared for marketing to the various mills.

Curbside Recycling Tips:
1. Use containers provided by the City of Savanna to separate your recyclables.

2. Take containers to the curb (in the same place you place your garbage) by 6 A.M. on the FIRST and THIRD WEDNESDAY of each month. The cost is $3.00 monthly, billed monthly.

3. The City of Savanna collection personnel will leave your emptied containers at the curb.
4. Items placed at the curb for recycling that are not recyclable will not be collected. A report card, indicating the problem, will be attached to the non-recyclable items.  PLEASE SEPARATE YOUR RECYCLABLES INTO INDIVIDUAL CONTAINERS TO REDUCE EFFORTS FOR CITY EMPLOYEES AS WELL AS KEEP THE COSTS DOWN ON RECYCLING.
5. The recycling containers are provided for your use at your present address, but remain the property of the City of Savanna. If you move please call the City of Savanna at 273-2251 (this number is available 24 hrs. a day) and they will pick up the container.

6. If you damage or lose your recycling container, the City will provide a replacement for $7.00.

Clean up days will be scheduled on the spring and fall - notice in local newspapers and WCCI radio.
 

1 -1/2 cubic yard refuse collection containers are available Monday through Friday.
 

$20.00 delivered and collected - $30.00 minimum - shingles extra

RATES ARE BASED ON CONTAINER LID BEING CLOSED - ADDITIONAL MINIMUM  CHARGES OF $5.00 WILL BE ASSESSED FOR HEAPED LOADS
 

Additional charges will be assessed for items placed for collection adjacent to or on top of the container.
